Australian Awards Scholarships for Kiribati
Australia Awards Scholarships are prestigious international awards offered by the Australian Government to the next generation of global leaders for development. Through study recipients develop the skills and knowledge to drive change in Kiribati and help build enduring people-to-people links with Australia.
The selection process is managed by Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in partnership with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Applicants will be assessed for their professional and personal qualities, academic competence and their potential to impact on development challenges in Kiribati.
Priority fields of study
The priority areas of study for Kiribati are decided each year in consultation with the Government of Kiribati. A human resource development priority list will be available at the time applications open.

Australia Awards Scholarships
These scholarships provide citizens of Kiribati with the opportunity to obtain an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification at an Australian tertiary institution.
Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships
These scholarships provide opportunities to people from developing nations in the Pacific to study at a tertiary institution in the Pacific for the benefit of development in their home countries. This type of scholarship is available for study at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Australia Awards Benefits
Australia Awards Scholarships are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the education institution, including any preparatory training.
Scholarship recipients will generally receive the following:
• return air travel
• a one off establishment allowance on arrival
• full tuition fees
• contribution to living expenses
• introductory academic program
• Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of the Scholarship
• supplementary academic support
• reunion airfare, and
• fieldwork allowance–for research students and masters by course work which has a compulsory fieldwork component.

The application process¬
Applications opens in 1 February and ends 29 April every year, and will be advertised in local media. Applications or supporting documents received outside the open period will not be considered.
To successfully be offered an award, a candidate must successfully complete all stages of the selection process:
1. All applications will be screened for eligibility. Eligible applications will undergo a merit-based ranking assessment.
2. Highest ranked candidates will be invited to sit an aptitude test, and candidates will be re-ranked based on this test score.
3. Highest ranked candidates will then be invited to undertake an interview. Candidates need to be available for interviews in Tarawa or through a telephone interview.
4. From the interview, candidates will be assessed as satisfactory or unsatisfactory. For satisfactory candidates, they will be shortlisted for either the AAS or AAPS scholarships or the reserve list, depending on their performance in interview and aptitude test.
5. To complete the final stage and be eligible for a scholarships offer candidates must satisfy:
(I) Admission requirements of the institution of study;
(II) Requirements of a police check;
(III) Visa requirements for the country of study, including medical; and
(IV) Complete pre-departure briefing requirements.

Applicants must submit with their application all of the relevant supporting documents as listed in the Application Form. Original documents or certified copies may be requested at any stage in the process.
