The National Scholarship Programme (NSP) of the Slovak Republic invites applications from international students, PhD students, university teachers, researchers, and artists for academic, research, or artistic stays in Slovakia. Funded by the Ministry of Education, Research, Development, and Youth, this initiative promotes mobility and fosters cultural and academic exchange in a variety of fields of study.

• Eligibility Criteria

University Students : Must be enrolled in master’s programs outside Slovakia or have completed at least 2.5 years of their studies in the same/similar program. They must be accepted for academic mobility to a Slovak higher education institution.
PhD Students : Must hold invitations from eligible Slovak institutions and provide detailed research plans aligned with their field of study.
University Teachers, Researchers, and Artists : Must have a PhD degree (or equivalent) or at least 4 years of relevant work experience (PhD studies count as work experience). Exceptions may be considered for special cases, such as force majeure situations.
Applicants must not have received an NSP scholarship in the past two years, barring exceptional circumstances. The program excludes those residing in Slovakia, enrolled in full-degree programs, or receiving other public-funded scholarships.

• Fields of Study and Course Programs
  

Scholarship holders can engage in a wide range of academic disciplines and research areas offered by Slovak public, private, or state higher education institutions. These include but are not limited to:

• Natural Sciences
  
• Engineering and Technology
  
• Social Sciences and Humanities
• Medical and Health Sciences
• Arts and Design

For university students , the host institution will provide a list of subjects corresponding to the applicant’s field of study, typically requiring 30 ECTS credits per semester. A detailed study plan, including subjects and credit allocations, must be submitted during the application process.

For PhD students and academics , the program accommodates specialized research or artistic projects tailored to their expertise. Host institutions expect applicants to demonstrate alignment between their proposed research/artistic activities and the institution’s academic priorities.

Scholarship Benefits

• Monthly stipends: €620 (university students), €1,025.50 (PhD students), and higher amounts for academics based on experience.
• Travel grants based on distance to Slovakia.
• Reimbursement of up to €250 for medical examination fees (for stays over 90 days).

Duration of Stay

• University students: 1–2 semesters.
• PhD students and academics: 1–10 months.

Application Process

• Submit applications online via the NSP portal by April 30 or October 31 annually.
• Required documents include CVs, motivation letters, detailed study/research plans, recommendation letters, acceptance/invitation letters from Slovak host institutions, diplomas, and confirmation of current studies or work status.
• Documents must be in Slovak or English, with certified translations provided for documents in other languages.

Selection Procedure
Applications are reviewed by a Selection Committee appointed by the Ministry. Criteria focus on:

• Reasons for choosing the host institution.
• Quality and relevance of the proposed study/research/artistic program.
• Applicant’s professional and personal qualities.
• Contribution to the host institution.
• Overall quality and consistency of the application.
  

Conditions and Responsibilities

• Scholarship holders must adhere to approved programs and submit interim/final reports.
  
• Non-compliance may result in reduced funding or repayment of disbursed amounts.
• Changes to stay details require prior approval from the Programme Administrator.
• Important Deadlines

Application deadlines: April 30 and October 31 .

• Original acceptance/invitation letters must reach SAIA within three working days post-deadline.
